San Luis Obispo Daybreak

   California, USA

On June 7th, SLO Daybreak Rotary welcomed 12 international team members of the North America Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run as they passed through San Luis Obispo on their way north. The Peace Run is a global torch relay that embodies humanity’s universal aspiration for peace, and promotes international friendship and understanding. (Sound familiar, Rotarians?)
The Peace Run relay teams are made up of runners from all over the world and all walks of life who have dedicated their time and energy to bring the Run to communities around the globe. Since its inception in 1987, the Run has traversed over 140 nations. This year’s North America Run, which started last April, is scheduled to end on August 13, 2016 in New York.
According to Peace Run’s Executive Director Salil Wilson, who introduced the team and gave a short presentation to our club, they share their message with school children, community groups and sporting organizations during their 10,000-mile journey through United States, Canada and Mexico, touching the lives of millions of people. The Peace Run does not seek to raise money or highlight any political cause, but simply strives to create goodwill among peoples of all nations. By passing the torch from one person to the next, the relay offers people the opportunity to express their hopes and dreams for a better, brighter future.
In the words of the Peace Run’s Founder, the late Sri Chinmoy, "World harmony, world peace: these are not mere dictionary words. These are realities, divine realities and supreme realities. May the flames of peace-torch kindle and awaken each and every world-citizen.”

We were honored to be able to host them at our meeting – and pass the symbolic “Peace Torch” ourselves – on one of their California stops. For more information on the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run, visit their website at
